Dyson CameraJet David Phelan Dyson has just launched a new product category. The company best known for floor care, hair care and air purifiers has unveiled its first toothbrush and, as you might expect from the brand, it’s like no other. I’ve been using it for more than a week.

So, the company spent six years developing a brush with a camera and LED built in.
As you brush, the camera sees the gaps between your teeth and at that point, a conical jet of mouthwash is sprayed, with some force, at your teeth and gums. It’s not at all painful, pleasant even, but you notice it happening. The brush vibrates at up to 58,000 times a minute, and the software anticipates where the gaps are as you brush, so it can spray the liquid at the right time and place.
The mouthwash is contained in the brush, in a 12.5ml reservoir that’s designed so that it doesn’t stop or clog, whichever way up you are holding the brush. This brush is different from any other toothbrush I’ve used, so the videos are kind of mandatory viewing. To see clearly in your mouth, you need to use a non-foaming toothpaste. There are several of those on the market (ones that don’t contain a material called sodium lauryl sulfate, or SLS) but Dyson has devised its own and a tube is supplied, along with a bottle of Dyson-recipe mouthwash.
If the toothpaste builds up, the camera can’t see so the jet of mouthwash stops. At this point, you can turn the brush off (the timer is smart enough to know you’re doing this), spit out the paste, and carry on. This does mean that, frankly, toothpaste goes everywhere, so it’s important not to wear your best shirt while you brush, and there’s a bit of clean-up needed after you’ve finished. You can also brush without the AutoJet and there’s a button action a jet whenever you like. And you can watch a livestream of the inside of your mouth on the MyDyson smartphone app.
Dyson CameraJet: Price And Availability The new toothbrush is available to order from today and it costs $499.99, £419.99 in the U.K. That’s not cheap, but compares well to the most expensive versions of electric toothbrush from brands like Oral-B and Sonicare.
